The Friends of Head Start committee was initiated to help raise funds for
items not specifically provided for in our grant money. Things like
playground equipment and landscaping are some of the things that are bought. Flapjacks and Fiddles is the annual breakfast and entertainment fundraiser, of Friends of Head Start, to help support the mission of Head Start of Yamhill County. This event provides a great breakfast for families, hosts several different bands, and provides lots of fun-filled activities for children. Head Start serves the community's most at risk young children, ages 3 to 5. These are not just any children but those living in poverty, foster care or those with documented disabilities or other extenuating circumstances. The education that Head Start offers is free. Head Start children are served two family-style meals that are nutritionally balanced (meeting USDA requirements) while learning to socialize appropriately at meal time. Literacy and numeric skills as well as an array of other social, emotional and safety skills are encompassed in the program. Children learn about the world around them and are able to experience science first hand through social and developmental activities provided. Food experiments as well as growing plants are among the favorites of Head Start children. Journals and portfolios are another fun way that children document their own Head Start experience. Social services and various enriching trainings are also offered free of charge to families, including the opportunity to earn a Childhood Development Associates degree (CDA). CDA classes are also open to community members and child care providers and can count towards credit at Chemeketa Community College. Some of our community partners: On-Point Credit Union, Comcast, West Coast Bank, Jakes Deli, Harvest Fresh Grocery, Third Street Books, Hidden Treasure, Oregon Stationary, Express Personnel, US Bank, Country Garden Nursery, Farnham Electric, Portland General Electric, Colvin Family Charitable Fund, Gingerbread Cook, Evergreen Aviation, Carlton Seed Company, Dr. Linda Meloche, Donna Nelson, Brandon Malloy, Barbara Kauer, Del Bellanger, Rosemari Davis, Brian Lamson Insurance Agency, Roger Young, Rocky Marshall, Steve Macy, Jeb Blading, and other friends provided generous donations. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supports us in our desire to provide for the neediest children in our communities. |
