Parent Involvement means that families take an active role in their child’s education and development, helping to make decisions about their program in partnership with other parents, staff and program coordinators. The contribution of family experience, perspective and participation is of tremendous value to Head Start Programs.
Parents are respected as adults with interests and aspirations of their own.  At the beginning of each year they develop a plan of activities together which gives them ongoing opportunities to learn, share, and grow.

Through home visits by staff and suggestions for activities which parents and children can do together, staff guides and assists parents in encouraging their children’s

development.  This kind of parent participation reinforces and supports the child’s total Head Start experience.

The highest area of parental involvement is volunteering in the classroom followed by parent meetings and classroom meetings, followed by attending field trips and helping from home.

Head Start encourages parents to come to the classroom, even if it only long enough to read a book, or pick up some toys. Staff develop relationships with parents in order to have shared observations and ideas about individual children. This partnership pays off by enhancing the child's learning environment.

Parents are invited to attend Parent Committee Meetings and parent education meetings through notes sent home, telephone calls, during home visits, or when children are transported to and from school.
